RECs
Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) document the environmental attributes of power created from a renewable energy source such as wind, solar and hydro. Other renewable sources include methane from landfill gas, biomass facilities, and fuel cells. 1 REC=1MWh of renewable electricity produced. These RECs can be purchased and sold in both the compliance and voluntary markets.
As the demand for renewable energy increases, compliance markets are being created to stimulate the production of renewable energy resources. State governments implement Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) which require a certain percentage of retail energy sales come from renewable sources. The Northeast (PJM and NEPOOL), Texas and California compliance markets have set the standard for other compliance markets. States currently participating in RPS markets include CA, CT, DC, DE, MA, MD, ME, NJ, PA, RI, and TX.
There is renewable energy demand beyond the compliance markets. Businesses and individuals purchase voluntary RECs to offset their environmental impact.
Amerex assists companies in the acquisition and marketing of renewable energy credits in the compliance and voluntary markets. As one of the world's largest inter-dealer brokers, Amerex has unmatched breadth of market presence. |
